RIO DE JANEIRO -- Theres fate, theres luck and then theres Danell Leyva, who wrapped it all up with two silver medals in less than 90 minutes Tuesday.Three months ago, there was serious question of whether the 24-year-old all-around bronze medalist in the 2012 Games could compete at all after he sustained a serious injury to his calf while breaking up a dog fight. One month ago, he was the alternate to the Olympic team, destined to watch the Rio Games from the stands. When Leyva was named to the U.S. team after John Orozco tore his ACL in training just three weeks before opening ceremonies, Leyvas stepfather and coach Yin Alvarez said he couldnt breathe he was so stunned. And when Leyvas hands slipped from the high bar in the Americans final routine of the Olympic team finals, the last error on a day in which the U.S. committed several to finish in fifth place, not many would have predicted he would have won the silver medal on high bar eight days later.Leyva won silver on the parallel bars Tuesday as well to raise the total medal count for the U.S. mens team to three (Alex Naddour took the bronze on pommel horse Sunday). Sam Mikulak finished fourth on high bar, just a tenth of a point below Leyva. But Leyva was the only one who didnt seem particularly surprised at the sequence of events. Asked how he would have reacted if someone had told him three months ago that hed end up winning two Olympic medals, he laughed.I probably would have argued with you and said, No, Im going to win gold, Leyva said. Thats the mentality you have to tell yourself. You have to believe within yourself that you can do more than people expect.Alvarez said he had just landed in Miami from a trip to junior nationals in Michigan in early May with his younger gymnasts, when he learned of the dog bite, which left a gaping divot in Leyvas calf and wounds on his fingers from where he tried to pry the dogs mouth open. When I got home, Danny has feet this big, Alvarez said, holding his hands about a foot apart. And he cant even walk. So to me, I thought the Olympics was over. So when he was named alternate to the team, I cant breathe because I think we wouldnt even come here to see the Olympics. I think its over. Four years of hard work is over. So when he got the chance to be alternate, I feel so proud. Oh my God, youre still alive.[But] he never gave up. He never told me he was not going to compete. ... He made the team and I said Were going to bring home more than one medal. Leyva called the high bar turnaround absolutely a redemption. Its incredible, honestly. Its a dream come true, he said. Nobody has a perfect day, but I feel like this was as close to perfect as I possibly could have gotten, and Im incredibly happy.Leyvas two medals are part of a 12-medal haul for the U.S. gymnastics program, the highest ever for the Americans.[Everything that happened] has absolutely given me a greater appreciation [for the medals], but I never thought it wasnt going to be possible, Leyva said. When I had the dog on my leg I was just thinking, Really, right now? This has to happen right now? But then as soon as I got back from the hospital I was like, Ill be back faster than people expect and thats exactly what the doctor said. He said hes never seen anybody heal that quickly.Miracles happen, you know?Vada Pinson Jersey . But as a batter hes still very young with a huge career ahead of him. Our top order are quite short of runs and hes got a real chance of making his way in this team as a batter.Wheater begs to differ, insisting that he wants to contribute more than one discipline to the team effort and that he will fight to win back the gloves again.I wass disappointed [with the decision] and the hierarchy at Hampshire know I want to keep, he said.ddddddddddddI didnt see that I was doing much wrong. I see myself as a keeper-batsman. I cant bowl and I dont just want to just be fielding. But having said that, when they asked me to play as a batsman in the top six I was going to take that rather than playing in the seconds. I feel I have battled to get back to where I was a couple of years ago with my batting and I feel in a good place.Thats my role now, to score runs and it gives me a lot of satisfaction to be able to contribute as I have in this match. But things change quickly in cricket and as far as keeping is concerned all I can do is take any opportunity that comes along.Wheater passed 5000 first-class runs during his partnership runs with Sean Ervine, who coincidentally reached the milestone of 10,000 during their 144-run stand for the sixth wicket. When Ervine chipped Patel straight to short extra cover to be out for 75, however, it precipitated an unforeseen flurry of wickets -- five in the space of 20 deliveries with only nine more runs added -- and reward for Patel and Josh Poysden, the young legspinner, who picked up the last three for career-best figures of 4 for 85.Losing Boyd through injury was tough but we worked really hard as a unit, Poysden said. I thought we kept going and kept fighting and to get the last five wickets for nine runs was really nice as we finally got what we deserved. On days one and two in first-class cricket you are not really expecting it to spin so I knew they were going to come quite hard at me when I bowled but that gives me a chance to get wickets so I never mind that.Warwickshires reply got off to a stuttering start, Andrew Umeed leaving a ball from Gareth Andrew that came back and clipped off stump before Ian Bell played inside one from Gareth Berg, at which point 11 for 2 on the scoreboard would have been a considerable fillip for a makeshift Hampshire attack.Andrew claimed another success at the start of his second spell as Varun Chopra played down the wrong line but Jonathan Trott and Sam Hain added an unbroken 53 for the fourth wicket. Trott might have been out on 59 near the close, giving a chance off Berg that McManus might have taken had he been standing further back. ' ' '
