Murray-USA TODAY SportsThe answer to the question “when will Daniel Jones start games for the New York Giants?” really can’t be answered. That depends on any number of variables, most importantly how the season unfolds for the Giants. As much as the Giants have shown their willingness to prepare for the future by drafting Jones No. 6 overall, given the loyalty ownership and GM Dave Gettleman have shown to Manning it seems unlikely they will be in a hurry to shove Manning aside. If Manning is playing well, or well enough, and the Giants continue to have a realistic chance to reach the playoffs, it’s hard to envision the Giants pulling a Kurt Warner on Manning. Still, Jones is going to play ... eventually. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated has charted quarterbacks drafted in Round 1 since 2008. Here is what he found:There is really no way to know how the 2019 season will go for the Giants. Unless Manning and the Giants are in the midst of a turnaround season, though, recent history tells we will probably see Jones ... eventually. Pratt has only been a linebacker for one year, converting from safety for his final year at NC State. He has plenty of experience in zone coverage from his days as a DB, but is still finding his way as a down-hill run defending linebacker. Pratt might start his career as a special teamer or sub-package player, but he could grow into a larger role as he learns the nuances of the linebacker position. At the very least he is likely an upgrade from Tae Davis. With the very next pick, the Giants added an outside receiver in DaMarkus Lodge from Ole Miss. Lodge was as a deep threat almost exclusively and has good long speed, but his route running and lateral agility remain questions. He also flashes the ball skills to make highlight-reel catches, but also shows inconsistencies catching the ball and can drop some “gimmie” passes. Lodge does have plenty of skill at getting clean releases against tight coverage, and could help free up the short area of the field for the rest of the Giants’ offense, in addition to being a tough, physical blocker for his teammates. The Giants have a third pick in the the fifth round, the 171st overall pick, or the first of three compensatory picks at the end of the round.
